In 2010, archaeologists discovered an astronomers' workshop containing a wall filled with micro-hieroglyphic texts and tables that prove astronomers were predicting eclipses seven centuries before they show up in the folded screen books known as codices. In 2013, the remains of the early bookmaking astronomers were dug up under the floor where they did their work. Professor Aveni shares his stories with Indiana Jones romance and academic authenticity in a lecture entitled "Digging Maya Astronomy (and Astronomers)." The Maya end-of-the-world prediction for 2 December 2012 focused attention on one of the world's most fascinating cultures. Maya pre-Columbian art, architecture, hieroglyphic script, and mathematical and astronomical systems are found from Mexico into Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Today, pyramid temples at Chichén Itzá and Yaxchilán intrigue us with structures aligned on celestial events. PROTECTING FLORIDIANS | TEXT VERSION | EN ESPAÑOL Attorney General Bondi's Weekly Briefing This week the Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its Assessment of Unsubmitted Sexual Assault Kits, giving us a clearer picture of the number of untested kits in our state. The report identifies more than 13,400 sexual assault kits that have not been submitted for testing, and makes suggestions about how to begin processing these kits. While the number may seem staggering, I believe as a state, we can and must process these kits expediently to unlock the key forensic evidence they may hold. This past September, standing with lawmakers, law enforcement officers, victims and victims' advocates, I called for the testing of unprocessed sexual assault kits in Florida, and as we approach the 2016 Legislative Session, my resolve to address this important public safety issue is stronger than ever. Sept. 9, 2015, Attorney General Bondi calls for testing unprocessed sexual assault kits. We must act swiftly. Beginning this process now will allow key DNA evidence to be entered into state and federal crime databases. These entries can produce matches that link criminals to unsolved crimes in Florida and throughout the country. This is truly a team effort and I want to thank FDLE for its thorough assessment and suggestions about how the state can test the thousands of unprocessed kits. I would also like to thank Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto for securing funding to conduct the statewide assessment, and every member of our state legislature for making this important public safety issue a top priority in the upcoming legislative session. We know it will take a number of years and more resources to test Florida's thousands of unprocessed kits, but we must begin the process now, because testing these kits will solve crimes and save lives. In The News Florida Governor and attorney general vow to test 13,435 unprocessed rape kits (VIDEO), WFLA Three arrested in Craigslist used car scheme, manipulated odometers, Palm Beach Post Attorney General Pam Bondi Continues Fight To Stop Flakka Deaths In Florida, Space Coast Daily Attorney General cracks down on synthetic drugs, Fox 4 Florida's Attorney General says drug traffickers are turning heroin into pills, WPTV Protecting Floridians Attorney General Bondi and FTC Sue Payment Processing Operation for Credit Card Laundering and Interest Rate Scam Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Federal Trade Commission announced that they have sued CardReady, LLC, a payment processing sales organization, and its three executives and three telemarketing company owners for allegedly laundering credit card transactions as part of a nationwide telemarketing scam based in Pinellas County. Attorney General Bondi and the FTC allege that CardReady facilitated the processing of nearly $20 million in illegal upfront fees collected from consumers being defrauded by a telemarketing scam that promised to reduce their credit card interest rates. CardReady and its executives allegedly created more than two dozen fake businesses to act as fronts and to launder the illegal fees. Not only did consumers suffer great financial loss in this scam, but CardReady's alleged credit card laundering activities helped the scammers evade detection from law enforcement and payment networks such as Visa and Mastercard. Attorney General Bondi Recognizes Human Trafficking Awareness Month January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and in recognition of the month, Attorney General Pam Bondi is sharing tips and resources about how to identify and protect potential human trafficking victims. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center estimates that more than 20 million people are enslaved worldwide, and Florida ranks third in the nation in the number of calls to the National Human Trafficking hotline. "Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and we must do everything in our power to protect the victims of this horrific crime and bring to justice the monsters who prey on them," said Attorney General Bondi. "Floridians can help stop human trafficking by knowing what to look for and who to contact to report suspected cases." More. Three Arrested for Craigslist Car Crimes Attorney General Pam Bondi's Office of Statewide Prosecution announced the arrests of three individuals allegedly using Craigslist to defraud customers buying used cars. According to the investigation, Denis Kutsayev and Tamara Kutsayeva, with the help of Renat Kutsayev, advertised used cars on Craigslist and manipulated vehicles' odometers and other features to make the vehicles appear more valuable, before selling them to unsuspecting consumers. The investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol's Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence revealed the defendants defrauded customers by removing the word rebuilt from the title of salvaged vehicles, altering the mileage on the title or rolling back the odometer. On one occasion, one of the defendants allegedly changed the odometer mileage of a vehicle from 117,000 miles to 46,335 miles before selling it on Craigslist. More. Attorney General Bondi Continues Fight to Stop Flakka Deaths in Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi announced continued efforts to stop Flakka and other synthetic drug deaths in Florida. The Attorney General's 2016 Florida Designer Drug Enforcement Act could categorically outlaw synthetic drugs in Florida. A recent grand jury report released by the Broward State Attorney's Office, which attributes more than 60 recent deaths to Flakka, highlights the legislation as one way to help stop Flakka-related deaths. "This report unfortunately confirms that our legislation is desperately needed to save lives in Florida," said Attorney General Bondi. "Flakka use is killing people and we must work together to ensure it does not overwhelm our state like Oxycodone did just a few years ago." More.
