2015 is the International Year of Soils! And NRCS is celebrating.

NRCS joined groups across the world this year to celebrate International Year of Soils in 2015. The 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly designated 2015 for the yearlong soils celebration as a way to increase understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is heading up efforts along with the Global Soil Partnership.

In a society that customarily views soil as dirt, it might be a stretch to see how soil could be associated with aesthetics, beauty, or art.

But, soils can exhibit beautiful contrast in colors, layers, and textures.

They are part of the tapestry of civilization, and have been used for spiritual and artistic purposes for ages.

Throughout 2015—the International Year of Soils—we have explored how we are connected to the soil through the food we eat, the buildings we live in, the products we use, and all that soil makes possible, including art.

Enjoy the final video in NRCS' International Year of Soils series: Soils, Art, and Culture: A Natural Partnership.
