Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 28/02/2016

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Friends Of The Observatory is launching a new way for Friends to explore what's happening at Griffith Observatory. Each month we will send you previews of the month's events so that you never miss an opportunity to be inspired by the frontiers of astronomy.
March 4, 2016 – All Space Considered  7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Griffith Observatory holds this exciting, FREE public program on the first Friday of every month in the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon. Join the Observatory's curatorial staff and occasional special guests as they examine and explain the most-talked-about subjects in astronomy and space science.

March 8, 2016 – Solar Eclipse WEBCAST – 5:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
The Exploratorium in San Francisco will present a real-time webcast of the total solar eclipse in Micronesia. Watch it at the link below.

The Exploratorium team will travel to the coral island of Woleai, in the Pacific Ocean 500 miles north of New Guinea, to bring you this astronomical event.

March 12, 2016 – Public Star Party – 2:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
FREE public star parties are held monthly at Griffith Observatory from 2:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. with the assistance of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers, and The Planetary Society. They are a chance for the whole family to look at the Sun, Moon, visible planets, and other objects; to try out a variety of telescopes; and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment.

March 13, 2016 – Daylight Saving Time – 1:00 a.m. becomes 2:00 a.m.
Daylight Saving Time (DST), or summer time, is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that in the evening daylight is experienced an hour longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times.

Sunday, March 13th 2:00 a.m. becomes 3:00 a.m.

November 6th 2:00 a.m. becomes 1:00 a.m.
March 19-27, 2016 – Spring Break
FREE, live presentations at 12:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. celebrating the start of spring on Saturday, March 19.

FREE presentations of Let's Make a Comet return to the Leonard Nimony Event Horizon during spring break, March 19-27.
Weekdays at 2:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m.
Weekends at 1:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.

Expect very heavy traffic and large crowds during spring break. Road closures near the Observatory are likely.

March 22, 2016 – Sunset Walk and Talk – 6:55 p.m. to 7:55 p.m.
Each month the Observatory offers a FREE sunset hike led by a Park Ranger and a Museum Guide. The hike starts on the Observatory's West Terrace, proceeds up the Charlie Turner trail to the Berlin Forest on the hill just north of the Observatory, and then returns to the West Terrace. The distance covered is about half a mile over the course of an hour at a very moderate pace with stops along the way to discuss the highlights and history of Griffith Park, and objects visible in the evening sky.
