Watch the NRCS International Year of Soils Video for November: Soils and the Atmosphere | | 2015 is the International Year of Soils! And NRCS is celebrating. NRCS joins groups across the world to celebrate the International Year of Soils in 2015. The 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly designated 2015 for the yearlong soils celebration as a way to increase understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is heading up efforts along with the Global Soil Partnership. | What do soils and the atmosphere have to do with one another? Folks in the Dust Bowl of the 1930's were very aware that soil, if not treated right, will interact with the atmosphere in ways that definitely aren't good. We think that's in the past, but it still happens today right here, in the USA. In reality, soil and the atmosphere are the closest of trading partners, always busy in a constant exchange and renewing of gases like water vapor, oxygen, nitrogen and of course, carbon dioxide.
Did you know that there is more carbon in soils than there is in land plants and the atmosphere combined?
