It has been been cited for numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including the mistreatment of its elephants Tembo and Sunda. Tembo is an African elephant who has been on display at the zoo for more than 33 years. Sunda, an Asian elephant, has been at the zoo for over 43 years. It is time for the Topeka Zoo to release these animals to an elephant sanctuary, before it's too late. Tembo and Sunda were taken from the wild as babies and have spent their lives in enclosures that don't meet their basic needs. Both suffer from foot problems because they live nearly half the year in a concrete barn due to severe winter weather. When they are able to go outdoors, they have less than 3/4 of an acre where they spend most of their time standing listlessly or rocking neurotically back and forth. It is time for the Topeka Zoo to put the health and welfare of Tembo and Sunda first. Tell Topeka Zoo Director Brendan Wiley and local city officials to release them to an elephant sanctuary. An elephant sanctuary can offer Tembo and Sunda vast acres to roam, ponds to bathe in, fresh vegetation and foraging opportunities, a warmer climate, and the company of many other elephants—some of the most basic things that elephants in captivity require to thrive. Many other zoos who cannot properly care for their elephants have chosen to give their elephants freedom by sending them to sanctuaries. If nothing changes, Tembo and Sunda could die from their foot problems -- It is the number one reason captive elephants are euthanized. We want to makes sure these two magnificent creature live out the rest of their days healthy and happy. It's the least they deserve after a lifetime of neglect. You can help bring happiness to Tembo and Sunda by signing this petition.
