MEDIA AVAILABILILTY: Coast Guard, partner agencies to reunite with 2 men rescued before the holidays 12/28/2015 11:47 AM EST WHO: Survivors of Dec. 20 capsized vessel incident on Potomac River WHAT: Reunion with Coast Guard, Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police and Saint Mary's County responders Stemcosky and Frend were rescued through a combined effort. Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Baltimore's command center received the initial mayday calls and they dispatched a Maryland State Police aviation unit, a boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes and a boat crew from the St. Mary's County Fire Department. The Coast Guard watchstanders vectored in the Maryland State Police helicopter crew, who located the survivors, and they directed the boat crew from St. Mary's County Fire Department on scene to rescue the men. Stemcosky and Frend will be present at Station Annapolis to meet with crewmembers and watchstanders involved in their rescue. MIAMI — Two U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crews rescued 12 people from their vessel taking on water in Cuban territorial seas Saturday. Rescued were one Jamaican, two Nicaraguan, one U.S., and eight Haitian crewmembers. On Saturday, watchstanders at the Coast Guard 7th District command center received notification that the Haitian Flagged, 120-ft coastal freighter, Granam ST Anne, was taking on water in Cuban territorial seas. Watchstanders quickly ordered the launch of two helicopters including a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater helicopter forward deployed in the Bahamas as part of Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos and a Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter. Upon arriving on scene, the crew of the coastal freighter had already abandoned ship into a life raft. The Jayhawk helicopter crew safely hoisted nine of the crewmembers and the Dolphin helicopter crew hoisted the remaining three. All 12 were transferred to Great Inagua, Bahamas. No medical concerns were reported.
