| PROTECTING FLORIDIANS | TEXT VERSION | EN ESPAÑOL | Attorney General Bondi's Weekly Briefing We learned this week, about one of what, hopefully, will be many arrests connected to the testing of a previously unprocessed sexual assault kit in Florida. Rodrecius Hamilton was arrested after a sexual assault kit from a 2009 rape was recently submitted to the state crime lab. Forensic evidence extracted from the kit allegedly matched Hamilton's DNA, which was previously collected and stored in a criminal database. This is just the beginning. As we continue our mission to eliminate the state's backlog of unprocessed sexual assault kits, we expect many more matches and many more arrests; not only in Florida, but nationwide. Finding these rapists and taking them off our streets will help make Florida an even safer place to live and raise a family, but we must also think of the victims. Each one of these kits represents a person who was violated in the worst possible way. Sexual assault is a horrific crime that profoundly changes the lives of victims and their families. The number of forcible rapes and violent sexual assaults in Florida is on the rise, and we must do everything in our power to stop the rapists and child molesters who prey on vulnerable Floridians. These monsters belong behind bars and eliminating the backlog of unprocessed kits is a major step to that end. This arrest serves as a reminder that testing these kits is a vital public safety issue, and I will continue to work diligently with lawmakers, law enforcement and victims' advocates in the upcoming legislative session to help eliminate the backlog. | | In The News Newly tested rape kit from 2009 leads to arrest, WTSP Bondi announces dismantling of Volusia County gift card, shoplifting scheme, Tallahassee Democrat 23 now arrested in Volusia racketeering operation, News 13 Bondi shuts down air conditioning, air duct service scheme, Palm Beach Post Avoiding Real Estate Scams, Fox News | Protecting Floridians Attorney General Bondi Shuts Down AC Service Scheme Attorney General Pam Bondi's Office obtained a temporary injunction to shut down an air conditioning service scheme targeting vulnerable Floridians. According to the complaint, 11 companies and individuals named as defendants used false claims, intimidation and scare tactics to coerce hundreds of consumers, many of them seniors, into purchasing expensive air conditioning parts and services that were not needed or rendered. The scheme cost consumers millions of dollars. The defendants allegedly used bait and switch tactics, enticing consumers with offers of massively discounted air conditioning services but then convincing the consumers to sign up for much higher priced services instead. According to the complaint, the defendants used weekly mailers and online ads to advertise air duct cleaning services, often for less than $20. Air duct cleaning services typically cost between $450 and $1,000. Once consumers signed up for these services, a representative of the companies visited the consumer's home and attempted to sell other, more expensive services. Attorney General Pam Bondi's Office of Statewide Prosecution and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office announced the dismantling of a massive racketeering operation resulting in 18 arrests. The defendants allegedly shoplifted merchandise from superstores, such as Home Depot, Lowe's, Target, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart, and then returned the stolen goods for in-store credit loaded onto gift cards. After obtaining the fraudulent gift cards, the defendants then sold them at Cash For Gift Card businesses in Deltona and Daytona Beach. Among those arrested is a father-son duo, Dale Holcombe, 52, and James Holcombe, 27, who are the owners of the Cash For Gift Card businesses. More.
